WHAT WE LOVE:

The Deborah Barrette is named for Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, serving until a battlefield wound forced her identity to be discovered.

Some soldiers fought for two years without ever being able to tell anyone their real name. Deborah Sampson enlisted disguised as a man and served in the Continental Army until a wound in battle finally forced the truth to come out.

The Deborah Barrette was designed in her honor, in warm topaz and golden shadow Swarovski crystal, meant to evoke the wood of the forests where so much of the Revolutionary War was fought and won. Thirteen crystals are set into the design — one for each of the thirteen original colonies that became a nation.

WHY FRAUNCES TAVERN and THE MET:

Sophie Kaye photographed the collection on location at Fraunces Tavern — the Lower Manhattan tavern where George Washington bid farewell to his officers on December 4, 1783 — and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, home to one of the world’s most significant collections of American Revolutionary‑era decorative arts and portraiture.

Every piece began as a study of a specific artwork or artifact.

One location is where the Revolution was lived; the other is where its art has been preserved.

The REVOLUTION Collection exists in the space between the two.

DESIGNER’S INSPIRATION / MUSINGS:

I designed the barrette to echo the warm, wood‑tones of the forest and the wood supporting the buildings, the trees, and the growth required to rebuild a new Nation - after so much destruction.

The trees also represent the strength of will of the woman... Deborah Sampson - who fought for what she believed was right. An ode to her — in candlelit topaz and golden shadow that flatter every skin tone.
