THE ART HISTORY and DESIGNER'S INTENTIONS BEHIND THE DESIGN OF THE HEADPIECE:

She was fourteen years old and she did not choose this....

Marie van Goethem was a student at the Paris Opéra Ballet in the late 1870s — a “petit rat,” as they were called, one of the small girls who haunted the wings of the stage and bled quietly into their pointe shoes. Her family was Belgian, poor, dependent. The ballet was not just a dream for Marie; it was a wage. 

She danced so her family could eat. She blistered, she bruised, she endured — and then she stood still in Edgar Degas’ studio and became eternal.

Degas rendered her in wax, in extraordinary and controversial detail: the thrust of her chin, the set of her shoulders, the raw, un-romanticized truth of a working girl’s body. He called it Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen. The world was not prepared.

Today, the bronze cast stands in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and it is considered one of the most significant sculptures of the 19th century.

A lush, sculptural crown of graceful branch-like forms, set with genuine rubies, luminous freshwater pearls, and hand-placed crystals.

The genuine rubies are not only ornamentation. 

They represent blood — the drops left in the satin of her shoes, the price paid for every arabesque, every curtain call, every coin brought home to her family. Woven among the pearls and branches, they tell the truth that the dance always obscures: that grace is the aftermath of sacrifice, and beauty is never free.
