WHY FRAUNCES TAVERN and THE MET:

Sophie Kaye photographed the collection on location at Fraunces Tavern — the Lower Manhattan tavern where George Washington bid farewell to his officers on December 4, 1783 — and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, home to one of the world’s most significant collections of American Revolutionary‑era decorative arts and portraiture.

Every piece began as a study of a specific artwork or artifact. One location is where the Revolution was lived; the other is where its art has been preserved.

The REVOLUTION Collection exists in the space between the two.

DESIGNER'S INSPIRATION / MUSINGS:

I have always loved 18th‑century shoe buckles — they were the jewelry of their day, and the sparkle people wore to show the world who they were. Learning that Martha Washington’s own jeweled buckles survive made the design feel inevitable.

So I turned the buckle into a hairpin: clear and French blue crystal, sized to sit perfectly in a chignon — a small piece of history you can wear every day.
